Andre Russell produced fourth consecutive innings of sensational display of power hitting which leads Kolkata knight riders to a stunning victory by five wickets against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the match no 17 played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The results lead KKR to the third victory out of their four matches, while RCB remain winless as they lost all the five matches.
* As it Happened:
Kolkata Knight Riders Skipper Dinesh Kartik won the crucial toss and elected to field first. The host RCB made a couple of changes while KKR made a single change in the presence of Sunil Narine. As put into bat first RCB needed to have a good start for setting up a massive total and indeed for the first time in the tournament, both the openers Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli managed to do so. Both of them added 64 runs to their partnership. Virat Kohli played a role of aggressor in the partnership while Parthiv Patel (25) who was LBW to Nitish Rana at the 5th ball of eight overplayed a run a ball knock by rotating the strikes while also finding the occasional boundary. That opening partnership was perfect to get going for Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Both the batsman managed to paved the way by adding 108 runs in 56 balls for the second wicket stand. AB de Villiers ( 63 runs off 32 balls) was the major contributor in the first half of the partnership, while Virat Kohli ( 84 runs off 49 balls) was in the second half. Both the batsman were destructive but after being dismissed shortly by KKR spinners, Marcus Stoinis gave RCB the momentum in the end-innings. In the last over of the innings, Marcus Stoinis added 18 runs with the help of two fours and a six, which helped RCB to get a massive total of 205 runs.
In the second innings, Pawan Negi took a stunning catch at fine leg to get rid of Sunil Narine (10) despite it, Chriss Lynn wasted no time to get going for the chase of the massive total. He with the help of free-flowing Robbin Uthappa managed to add 65 run partnership for the second wicket. However, Pawan Negi almost made the difference by his brilliant bowling performance in his first match of the 2019 season. In the first over he dismissed Robin Uthappa ( 33 of 25 balls) by beating him in the air, and in the second over he managed to get rid off Chriss Lynn ( 43 runs off 31 balls) with a delivery that turned very sharply into the stumps.
The responsibility was now on the Nitish Rana and the skipper Dinesh Karthik and they did not disappoint. Nitish Rana, in particular, scored a brilliant knock of 37 runs from 23 balls before he got dismissed by the current purple cap holder Yuzvendra Chahal. Together both Pawan Negi and Yuzvendra Chahal bowled a brilliant spell by putting brakes on the KKR scoring rate and managed to keep the chances very high for their first victory of the season until Russell happened. Needing 64 runs of the last 4 overs, Russell came in and played a stunning inning of 48 runs from just 13 balls. After starting the 18 over with a couple of dot balls, the Jamaican went into smashing seven magnificent maximums and a four to help Kolkata Knight Riders to chase down the massive total of 205 runs with five balls to spare.
* The Game Changer:
Andre Russell by scoring 6,6,6,1,6,6,6,4,6 in the last 9 balls he faced from his unbeaten stunning knock off 48 runs from 13 balls completely turned the match in Kolkata Knight Riders Favour. This monstrous knock of Russell leaves RCB absolutely shellshocked.
