Kings XI Punjab began their 2019 IPL Journey on a successful note and controversial start as they defeated hosts Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
* As it Happened:
Rajasthan Royals keeper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and continued the trend of bowling first in this season of IPL so far. Kings XI Punjab got off to the worst possible start as KL Rahul who started with a boundary didn’t manage to last long and got dismissed by Dhawal Kulkarni.
Both Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle took some time to settle, but then finally started to raise the tempo as KXIP reached 50 runs in the 8th over.
After the 8th over, Agarwal who seems to be looking in a lovely touch failed to score big and got dismissed for 22. However, Gayle soon started to plundering the bowlers as he hit Jaydev Unadkat for three consecutive fours and one six to reach his fifty of 33 balls. Sarfaraz Khan also joined the party, and then both the players added 84 runs partnership off just 42 balls for the third wicket.
It took something special to dismiss Gayle as the ball looked like sailing over for a six but Rahul Tripathi produced a brilliant catch on the boundary. However, Sarfaraz with his brilliant shot-making scored a 46 not out which help the Kings to post 184/4 in their 20 overs.
Chasing the target of 185 runs to win Royals got off to a flying start as openers Ajinkya Rahane and Joss Buttler built a solid 78- run partnership, which saw Buttler bringing his Fifty in just 29 balls.
After it, KXIP captain and off-spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin finally take the breakthrough by dismissing Rahne for 27. However, Buttler who was looking in the fine touch continued to play some aggressive strokes.
But what happened afterwards, that will surely be remembered in many up-coming IPL seasons. Joss Buttler became the first batsman to be Mankad-ed in IPL history as the KXIP Kepper ran out him at 69 runs.
Sanju Samson and Steve Smith then added 40 runs for the 3rd wicket. But Sam Curran who was very expensive in the first three overs of his spell, turn the tide down on its head by dismissing both the batsman in his final over- the seventeenth over of the game which unfortunately ended Rajasthan Royals chase on 170/9 in their 20 overs. KXIP won the game by 14 runs.
