Rajasthan Royals beat a hapless Royal Challengers Bangalore by seven wickets in the 12th edition of Indian Premier League at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Tuesday evening. In a match between two teams in need of inspiration to open their account, Shreyas Gopal with his sensational bowling performance to dismiss RCB’s key top-order batsmen and Jos Buttler confident knock of 59 leads Rajasthan Royals to record their first win of the season, while Royal Challenger’s Bangalore remains pointless.
* As it Happened:
Rajasthan Royal Skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to field first. Kohli said he would have been inserted into bat on what he thought was a dry pitch so, both the captains were happy with the result. As put into the bat first, RCB went back to the opening combination from the tournament opener with Virat Kohli walking alongside Parthiv Patel. Both the openers provided a steady start. However, it was Parthiv Patel who played the role of aggressor as he hit three boundaries in the fifth over of powerplay and managed to finish it with 48 runs on the board. Immediately after that Shreyas Gopal was introduced into the attack and with his sensational bowling performance managed to take three crucial wickets in the short period of time.
As slip to 73-3, Royal challenger Bangalore lost a bit of momentum. Parthiv Patel, who had been a spectator watching his teammates fall at the other end, then took the charge upon himself and brought up his 12th IPL fifty to help his team get a grip. Parthiv Patel and the debutant Marcus Stoinis added 53 runs for the fourth wicket stand before Parthiv was dismissed for a superbly calculated knock of 67. Marcus Stoinis then joined by Moeen Ali and the duo struck 32 runs in last 17 balls of the innings and guided RCB to a fighting total of 158.
In chasing of 159 runs, Jos Buttler and Ajinkya Rahane got Rajasthan off to a great start, as they managed to get more than half the job done inside the powerplay by adding 55 runs. After Ajinkya Rahane got dismissed in the eight over by Yuzvendra Chahal brilliant tossed up delivery. Steve Smith came next and with its experience was at the work, he and Buttler added 44 runs in next 5 overs. Buttler managed to score his fifty in this time and had made 59 by the time he fell to another tossed up delivery by brilliant Yuzvendra Chahal. However, Chahal fightback was not enough as Steve Smith (38) and Rahul Tripathi were involved in a 56 run partnership that ended the game completely in their favour. Rahul Tripathi finished the game in the style by hitting Umesh Yadav for a six over square-leg.
